Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is shown emerging from a paper surface in an analogous fashion to the budding stage of its life cycle where it crosses the plasma membrane of a cell. Here, the transition from a rudimentary two-dimensional sketch to a complex three-dimensional model of HIV represents our progression in understanding the biology of HIV, and by the same token, advances in our ability to treat and combat it, both directly and through preventative approaches.
