Every day it becomes clearer that the immune system is a universe of infinite connections. This issue explores the intricate relationship between sex, immunity, and reproduction; factors often dismissed as confounding variables rather than embraced as essential guiding principles.

The cover brings these themes together through one of immunology’s most mysterious phenomena: pregnancy, a state where cellular protection and immune tolerance are tightly regulated to sustain the demands of new life. Surrounding the fetus is a dynamic community of microbes, not only representing the body’s need to guard against external threats, but also acknowledging the microbiome as an integral yet ambivalent arm of the immune system. The intertwined strands of DNA act as a communication bridge emphasizing how sex and genetics shape immune responses throughout life.

As I step into my role as Design Director, it has been a privilege to collaborate with incredible contributors and creative minds who helped bring this issue to life. I hope you enjoy reading through these pages, admiring the designs, and reflecting on the phenomenal talent within our community. I am looking forward to the issues ahead.
