In January of 2013, a bold new initiative was made a reality, and graduate students from the Department of Immunology published their first issue of IMMpress Magazine. It was an instant hit. Even more significant than their initial success is the fact that IMMpress continues to address important topics in our field, and it also delves into relevant aspects of graduate life and provides updates from our alumni. I eagerly look forward to every issue of IMMpress Magazine. Not to be outdone, the exceptional IMMpress team is at it again, engaging us with another stimulating and timely issue, which brings us a thoughtful set of feature articles on the topic of HIV and infectious diseases. Together with the usual high level of design sophistication, insightful editorials and perspectives, our Immunology graduate students continue to make IMMpress a must read for all us. I am again very thankful to the editorial team for their terrific efforts.
As I have been updating you in previous issues of IMMpress, the Department of Immunology has a new academic and research strategic plan, which can be accessed at http://www.immunology.utoronto.ca/aboutus/sp.htm, and we are now implementing many of the initiatives outlined in the plan, including the creation of a new M.Sc. degree in Applied Immunology, recruitment of a new tenure-stream faculty member, and of a new Research Projects Officer for the Department of Immunology. As we move forward with the plan, I feel that we have a bright future for the Department of Immunology.
As we think about the future, it is also important to reflect upon our past achievements and contributions from members of our community, and with this in mind, I would like to remind you that this year marks the Department of Immunology’s 30th Anniversary, and we will be celebrating this milestone with an afternoon symposium and dinner on November 14, 2014. I trust that Lynne Omoto has already sent you an invitation to this event, and I hope that many of you will be able to join us.
As per usual, you will enjoy this issue of IMMpress Magazine, and the upcoming ones, and importantly whether you are an alumnus of the department, or a prospective student, I really look forward to hearing from you.
