The IMMpress Magazine team is again delighting us with another exciting and timely issue. With the start of autumn and with the flu season upon us, IMMpress Magazine brings us a wonderful set of feature articles on the topic of viral infections. Together with the usual high level of design sophistication, insightful editorials and perspectives, our Immunology graduate students keep raising the bar. Additionally, I remain extremely pleased with their sustained vision and dedication, and I am thankful to the editorial team for their terrific efforts.
As I have mentioned on the previous issues of IMMpress, the Department of Immunology is currently taking stock of itself as we develop an academic and research strategic plan. A draft of the plan was recently presented to the faculty and student leaders of the Department, and we are hoping to have a finalized version by year’s end. This will be the first formal strategic plan for the Department of Immunology, and I am confident that it will provide us with a set of important guiding principles for the future of Immunology at the University of Toronto and its fully-affiliated hospital-based research institutes. You can learn more about the process and the outcome at www.immunology.utoronto.ca/about/sp.htm.
I hope you enjoy this issue, and the upcoming ones, and importantly whether you are an alumnus of the department, or a prospective student, I really look forward to hearing from you.
Juan Carlos Zúñiga-Pflücker, PhD
Professor and Chair
